The Biological Sciences Graduate Programs (BISI) - BioGrad Pathways has several exciting events coming up in April that may be of interest to both graduate and undergraduate students.

Event 1: BISI Alumni Career Chat - Research Careers in Federal Government

  • Speaker: Dr. Noor D. White Carreiro, Staff Scientist, National Eye Institute, NIH
  • Date: April 7, 2026 (Tuesday)
  • Time: 1 - 2 pm ET

  • Brief Speaker Bio: Dr. White is a BISI alum who worked with Drs. Karen Carelton and Mike Braun during her time at UMD. She is currently a Staff Scientist in the Confocal Microscopy Unit at the National Eye Institute, NIH. She is a molecular biologist with extensive expertise in genetics, bioinformatics, confocal and electron microscopy including super resolution microscopy. 
  • Learning objectives of the session: Learn more about the speaker's career journey post graduation, what a non-tenure research career looks like and get all your questions answered about getting employed in federal research labs.

Event 2: Employer Engagement with RadBio-Q, LLC

  • Speaker: George O. Redmond, CEO, RadBio-Q, LLC
  • Date: April 14, 2026 (Tuesday)
  • Time: 1 - 2 pm ET

  • Learning objectives of the session: Interact with the CEO of RadBio-Q and learn about the company and the job opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. 

Event 3: Employer Engagement with Singularity Quantum Inc. 

  • Speaker: Blake Martin, Co-founder & CTO, Singularity Quantum Inc.

  • Learning objectives of the session: Meet the co-founder of a start-up and learn about starting your own company, job opportunities at start-ups, resumes and cover letters for start-ups.  

Event 4: BISI Alumni Career Chat - Research Careers in Federal Government

  • Speaker: Dr. Carly Muletz Wolz, Microbiologist, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
  • Date: April 21, 2026 (Tuesday)
  • Time: 1 - 2 pm ET

  • Brief Speaker Bio: Dr. Muletz Wolz is a BISI alum who worked with Dr. Karen Lips during her time at UMD. She is currently a Microbiologist in the Complex Microbial Systems Group at National Institute of Standards and Technology. Prior to NIST, she worked as a molecular ecologist and pathogen scientist at the Centre for Conservation Genomics, Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Her research focuses on how to engineer microbes to serve a desired function. 
  • Learning objectives of the session: Learn more about the speaker's career journey post graduation, what a non-tenure research career looks like and get all your questions answered about getting employed in federal research labs.

Event 5: Employer Engagement with Merck

  • Speaker: Dr. Alan J. Goggins, Associate Principal Scientist, Merck
  • Date: April 28, 2026 (Tuesday)
  • Time: 2 - 3 pm ET

  • Learning objectives of the session: Interact with associates from big pharma: Merck and learn about industry postdoc, internship and job opportunities at Merck.
