The Iris Photo booth

The University Career Center is excited to offer the Iris professional photo booth, a new free service for UMD undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Capture your professional headshot for platforms like LinkedIn, Handshake, your online portfolio, or any other professional contexts.

Location & Hours:

Priority Booking for Students:

  • Undergraduate and Graduate Students: Schedule an appointment in Handshake to reserve a 15-minute time slot.  In Handshake, click "Career Center" on left navigation bar, select "Appointments" and then "Headshot Photo Booth" to choose a day and time that works best with your schedule.

  • Faculty, Staff, and UMD Alumni: You are welcome to drop by during operating hours (Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm). However, priority is given to students with appointments.

  • Planning to bring a group of 10 or more students to use the Photo Booth?  Please email Erica Ely at eely@umd.edu to reserve the space. In your email, include the number of people, your preferred date and time, and any additional dates and times you may have available.

What to Wear:

  • Business casual or professional attire is recommended.
  • Since this is a headshot, your pants and shoes are generally not visible in the photo.  Focus on what you wear on top and ensure you’re comfortable!
  • Opt for solid colors that align with your intended industry’s standards.  Since the background is white, avoid wearing all white on top so you do not blend into the background.
  • If going with a pattern, keep it simple.
  • Make sure your clothes are wrinkle-free as wrinkles in clothes are difficult to edit out.

Practice Your Smile: It might feel silly, but practicing your smile in the mirror can help you prepare. Try various smiles—big, small, with teeth, and without.

Give Yourself Plenty of Time: If you're traveling across campus to reach us, be sure to allocate enough time to prepare before your scheduled session. A restroom is conveniently located on the same floor as the University Career Center, allowing you to freshen up. Additionally, the Photo Booth room is equipped with a mirror for any last-minute adjustments. Please be considerate of others who may be waiting.

  1. Schedule Your Appointment: Book your time slot through Handshake.
  2. Arrival: Come to the University Career Center at your appointed time, dressed in professional or business casual attire.
  3. Check-In: Go to the UCC front desk and mention your photo booth appointment. Follow the provided check-in procedures.
  4. In the Booth: Sit on the adjustable stool and follow the prompts on the screen. Optionally, control the booth via smartphone by scanning a QR code.
  5. Taking Photos: Follow on-screen instructions to take three photos and edit one photo. Be mindful of those waiting.
  6. Photo Delivery: Your photos will be emailed to you for download and further editing. Access them for up to one year after they are taken.

The Iris photo booth is provided to users for the purpose of professional headshots. Photos must NOT contain inappropriate gestures, props, or nudity.

Please note that the University Career Center has administrative access to all photos and reviews them periodically to ensure appropriate use and content. Inappropriate use will result in loss of privileges to use the booth as well as referral to the Office of Student Conduct.
